US President Donald Trump surprised the world by separating America from the Paris Climate Agreement. He had been criticizing this deal from the beginning, but in many other cases he softened his attitude, so everyone expected that he might change his attitude. More recently, in the G-7 conference, when Trump talked about separation of messages from all the member countries on the Paris Agreement, and later on to make his decision, it still felt that he wanted to deal more with the deal. Trump has made such arguments behind his decision that hardly anyone's hug. He has said that in this agreement, 'polluting countries' like India and China have received unfair benefits.
Under this agreement, the two countries will double coal power plants in the next few years and India will get billions of dollars to fulfill its commitments. Trump feared that these measures would give China a financial edge over the US. They are probably unaware of this, or ignoring the fact that both India and China are serious about the goals set out under the treaty. According to a report released in the United States last days, the two are moving ahead with the goal of reducing carbon emissions in the 2015 agreement. The report expects that India will start generating 40% of its electricity from non-conventional sources, by 2022, eight years ago, by the target set. Whatever the excuse the trump makes, the world knows that who wants to make it happy by getting out of the treaty.
His announcement has been most welcomed in those areas of America where there are coal mines and where many people were unemployed due to their closure. By fulfilling his election promise of 'America First', Trump has won the hearts of a section of his country. But in this order they have also compromised with their international status. Leaving the command of the international campaign on climate change will affect the role of America in all global forums.
